Something I find fascinating about writing and journaling is how it helps you understand your own thoughts better. When I need to find clarity, I write. When I need to better understand how I feel about something, I write. When I need to remember something, I write. When I need to understand how well I understand something, I write.
The amazing thing about writing is that it is not just about the writing itself. It is about the process of thought required to create the writing. In order to write about something well, you must reflect on it, think about it in new ways and dive deeper into your understanding of it.
This is all why we created Roadschool Journals. Exploring with your family is an excellent way to learn but if you don't write and reflect on the experience afterward then some of your newfound knowledge and takeaways may be lost. Writing about your experience at a place, what you learned, and what surprised you, not only helps you remember your experience better, it actually deepens your overall experience. The writing and reflecting about the experience becomes part of the experience itself.
Writing not only deepens, enhances and extends the experience, it allows you to reflect and remember an experience more accurately days, months and years afterward. Reading our own words about a place, an experience, a moment, is the most immersive and accurate way to take us back to the feeling of being there in the first place.
We first wanted to create Roadschool Journals to encourage explorers to practice their writing skills in an engaging way that helps them deepen their understanding of their adventures and field trips.
As we started using our writing tool with our own sons we saw our vision come to life: their writing skills have flourished and the depth of knowledge and comprehension in their reflective essays is impressive. But we also realized that in creating Roadschool Journals we made a simple way for families to capture their memories together.
