Aloha! It has been awhile since we have updated the blog. Back in May we came across an exciting opportunity to live with another family in Kauai and create a homeschooling community together. We spent the next six weeks preparing for this once in a lifetime opportunity, packing, dreaming and preparing to store our trailer for an extended stay on the island of Kauai.
Once we arrived in Kauai we realized that community living and island life were not the right fit for our family and decided to travel back home to Washington and continue life on the road. Some people may think that this change in plans might feel like a waste after investing so much time and energy into attempting to move to Kauai for a year. However, we are incredibly grateful that we had the chance to visit and explore the island for ten days and are endlessly appreciative for the perspective that we gained from this experience.
We created some core family memories on Kauai: swimming in the warm turquoise waters of Hanalei Bay, snorkeling with sea turtles, gazing at the Na Pali coast while tropic birds soared above our heads and tropical fish swam beneath us, the grand views of Waimea Canyon, musubis, shave ice, kalua pork and steamed taro buns. The island was a beautiful place to visit but we knew it would never feel like home.
Returning home to our little home on wheels, has made us more grateful than ever for our life on the road. We love our freedom, flexibility and autonomy. We love that every day is full quality of family time. We love the unhurried, slowed down pace of our days, with plenty of space to rest and play and explore. We love living in a new home base every few weeks and getting to know the west coast better with each season. We love getting to mountain bike, ski, hike and surf, different sports and adventures at each new destination. We love the small, cozy, functional space that we have made into the best home we have ever lived in together. We love visiting family and friends along the way and making new friends everywhere we go. We thought we might be ready for a different adventure but we were already right where we belong.
